Children ARE being left behind...They deserve more |

We have a Crisis....
There is
a crisis going on with our youth, today. It's very confusing and frustrating and yet, children are not gaining the necessary
education needed, specifically, in Oakland, CA. Children are seeing more in 15 years than most people born in the 60's
or 70's has ever or will ever see in their lifetime.
Teachers
are overwhelmed with very large classrooms, only to have California perform more school closures. Less education,
more crime. This is a sociological dilemma.
However,
this is more than massive school closures. This is a crisis and a state of emergency. When children do not have
any education, the street life becomes home, but what's happening is; children as young as 8 years old are
on the street corners trying to raise money for food, most times....and the average age of death among young African Americans
and Latinos; especially males, is 15 years old.
This level
of academic and social need poses a great challenge, but also represents an opportunity for comprehensive arts education programs,
which can often reach and engage students who have not been well served by other educational programs.

Alameda County
particularly, leads the chart in negative statistics. Over 47%
of our students drop out of school before reaching twelfth grade. Because of
the high illiteracy rates and lack of supportive services, our youth have no choice but to congregate
in areas such as local pool halls and nightclubs that illegally sell alcoholic beverages to minors and encourage a “safe
haven” for drug trafficking.
High
illiteracy rates and lack of after school activities also force youth to either involve themselves in mischievous
activities or remain within the comfort of their homes and await opportunities to socialize during the next day at school.
Unfortunately,
the activities that relate to gang banging, drug dealing and stunts of violence are becoming more of a reality within Oakland’s inner city communities.

“VisionsOne Young Scholars” Project expects to open “windows
of opportunity” for students to "Say No" to drug and alcohol abuse
in their future, and to develop an enhance their multi-cultural awareness so they can utilize their academic, social, self-health
attributes in order to achieve their potential and become a more effective, productive member of the 21st Century work force,
and local community.
All Schools, no matter the neighborhood, has the right to working facilities, books, supplies most of all, children have
the right to Equal opportunity to Equal Education
